Why is this funny?

We are having to reassess our resources here in our ol’ HR department. Times are tough, banks failing, dollar falling (again), crude therefore rising (again), housing still falling down the well without that little “kerplunk” sound – you get the idea.

In talking about the wide range of projects, inititiatives and enhancements that we were working on within HR, we applied a very short, subjective test to determine which items would have to be postponed or eliminated.

Anything that sounded like it could be in the table of contents of the SHRM or WAW magazine – we stopped. What was left either sounded like the work of HR to identify and manage risk related to talent; or the stuff of our business. The test worked great.

When we shared this test with a couple of our top executives they all laughed. Hmmm… We listened to the market for HR services (our company)  rather than mimicing the market for people who sell magazines about HR.

  1. That is the acid test. Really powerful…and I’m going to do work that has no chance of being published. I take that under advisement.

  2. Thanks for the visit Frank. Happy to see KnowHR.com/blog back up and running.

At our kitchen table the motto is: “it’s better to be paid than to be published.”
